When most people say they want to lose weight, what they really mean is that they want to lose body fat.
There’s an important difference.
Losing weight can mean losing fat, muscle, water—or some combination of all three. And especially as we get older, simply watching the number on the scale go down shouldn’t be the only goal.
We want to lose body fat while maintaining as much muscle as possible.
That’s exactly what Tom has done.
Over the last eight months, Tom has:
And he did it without an extreme diet, cutting out entire food groups, or trying to overhaul everything overnight.
Tom is also in his 60s, which makes maintaining his muscle throughout this process even more important.
Muscle isn't just about looking fit. Maintaining muscle as we age helps support strength, physical function, independence, metabolism, and our ability to continue doing the things we enjoy.
For Tom, the goal wasn't simply to make the scale go down. We wanted to improve his body composition.
Tom originally joined us for our 28 Day New Year Reset Challenge in January.
Rather than starting with calorie counting or a restrictive meal plan, we focused on some of the basics.
One of the first changes was simply eating breakfast.
Tom had a tendency to eat very little earlier in the day, which often led to more hunger, snacking, and overeating later in the evening. By fueling himself earlier, we were able to start creating a more consistent eating pattern throughout the day.
We also worked on building balanced meals and snacks that included a source of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
Nothing extreme. Nothing complicated.
Just habits he could realistically repeat.
After completing the 28 Day New Year Reset, Tom decided to continue with our Ongoing Nutrition Coaching Program.
That's where we were able to continue building on the foundation he'd already created.
Once his basic nutrition habits were consistent, we introduced food logging.
Tracking wasn't the starting point—and that was intentional.
By the time Tom began logging his food, he already had a much better understanding of how to build balanced meals. Tracking simply gave us more information.
We could see how much he was actually eating, how much protein he was getting, where adjustments could be made, and whether he was eating enough to support his activity while still working toward fat loss.
That additional information helped take his results to another level.
This is one of the biggest things we want people to understand about weight loss.
The goal shouldn't be to become a smaller version of yourself at the expense of your muscle.
Muscle becomes increasingly important as we age. If weight loss comes from a combination of fat and significant amounts of muscle, the number on the scale may look better—but that doesn't necessarily mean we've improved our health in the way we intended.
That's why our approach combines adequate nutrition, protein, strength training, and a sustainable calorie deficit rather than simply trying to eat as little as possible.
Tom continued training throughout his nutrition coaching, giving his body a reason to hold onto that muscle while his nutrition supported gradual fat loss.
Eight months later, the result isn't just a lighter body weight.
It's 25 pounds less body fat with his muscle maintained.
That's a very different kind of transformation.
Tom's progress didn't happen in 30 days.
It happened over eight months of consistently working on his habits, learning more about how to fuel his body, making adjustments when needed, and continuing to show up.
And that's exactly why his results are so meaningful.
We aren't interested in helping someone lose as much weight as possible as quickly as possible only to regain it a few months later.
Our goal with nutrition coaching at B3 Gym is to help people create a healthier lifestyle they can actually maintain.
Sometimes that starts with something as simple as eating breakfast.
Then we build from there.
Tom's results are a great reminder that you don't have to do everything perfectly to make significant progress. You need the right habits, enough consistency, and a plan that can evolve as you do.
And yes—you can absolutely work toward losing body fat without sacrificing the muscle you've worked hard to build.
If you've been trying to lose weight but you're tired of restrictive diets, quick fixes, or watching the scale go up and down, nutrition coaching may be the missing piece.
At B3 Gym, we work with both nutrition-only clients and clients who want to combine nutrition coaching + fitness.
We'll help you look beyond the number on the scale and focus on building habits that support better body composition, strength, energy, performance, and long-term health.
Your starting point doesn't have to be perfect.
You just have to be ready to start.
